Sorry for the BUMP, folks, BUT had to say, they are a GREAT geezer circuit show, for sure! I had never seen either of them, but they have held up amazingly well. Of course, Johnny has some health issues (sight, fraility, etc), so he sits while playing, but their voices were great, playing was outstanding, and their bands were both out of this world. Drumming was passable, good I'd say, but both bass players, and esp lead players were just unreal. Doug Rappoport, lead player for Edgar, is quite the up and coming kid wonder, if you ask me. And Johnny played a much more driving TX blues/rock than I had been led to expect from reviews of his more straight up blues outings of late. Man, that guy is something.

If you have the chance to see them, I'd put them in almost the same category as Winwood/Clapton in the sense of having held up well, more than capable of putting on an extremely high energy show, and keeping you more than entertained with anything but a geezer circuit show of some fading rock and blues stars...

Oh, and the Edgar Winter sax lead on "our" own TOYLLight was really something...

Hey BD and others--I think there was a thread on them, but can't find it easily.

Are they doing well these days? Latest tour info? Worth the Big Bucks if the chance arises?

Any input appreciated...

Thanks, Bill; was hoping for a personal observation, but appreciate the comment on the friends liking it...

Anyone seen them lately?

Saw Johnny last spring and he rocked a small venue - basically a big bar. Best $16 I spent in awhile.

Johnny Winter, James Montgomery, Jay Geils
Colonial Theatre, Keene NH Friday September 25.
If you are in town for this and need a place to stay I've got plenty of room. And know good spot out back for attitude adjustment opportunities!
Peace, Vapors

Hey BD--sorry for pressing the issue, but from the absence of a response, do I take it you weren't the one that touted either/both Winter bros at some point in the past? Was thinking you sang their praises and had seen them recently, so interested in your take, but may have been confused...?

No, what happened was that I actually got to meet and hang out with Edgar for about an hour before he went onstage as part of Ringo's band last year at Mt Winery in Saratoga. I think I mentioned the same to jglynn in a post because of his love for Johny. Ed was a super, incredibly nice mellow guy who was really excited to tell me about his plans for a Broadway show based on "Frank N' Stein" (ala the monster as a jekyll and hyde guy; hey, a major LA movie producer recently spoke to me about a show based on the Turtles, so who am I to scoff? If my 8 year old listens to Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep "singing" ABBA, anything goes...) Now, I do think, and have posted, that Johny's cover of "Highway 61" with Derek Trucks at Clapton's Crossroads fest in Chicago a couple of years back was a true highlight of that show (which was one of the first reunited Winwood/Clapton sets).

So, this is a long winded way of saying GO. If it's under or near $60, it'll be well worth it. Ed is a really, really good musician - on multiple instruments.

Ha! You missed my "gush fest" addition above!

I did!

And it was unfrickin real!

They were both great...

I think I am still being objective, but I rank them and Win/Clap as two of the best geezer circuit shows I have seen, and I have seen most the past five yrs, save for the Stones...

He's been getting better - getting his chops back. His 'new' manager is the main reason he is still with us. Johnny's old manager was using him as a cash cow and from what I read pretty much feeding him pills and booze. The new guy (Paul Nelson) helped him get clean and get back into the music.

Hey J--so to restate, the two boys put on quite the show, in part due to their respective "band mates" in which I find myself continually amazed at the average players these geezer circuit folks can pick up...is this what Rick Derringer and Ronnie Montrose were in the early 70s? I dunno...but these lead players, and bass players, were great.

And, then, both the Winter bros, in their own way, were at the top of their games.

Great stuff. Admittedly, we paid $75, BUT we could literally touch both of them...very cool.

Glad you had a good time. As far as seeing them live I say better late than never. The only reason I saw JW was cause a Johnny Winter head dragged me to see him in '82 or '83 - I had a blast and have seen him 10 or 15 times since. I have not seen Edgar yet but I will if I can. When I saw Johnny last spring Paul Nelson came out and just jammed for about 20 minutes to get the drummer and Bass player warmed up - he was real good.

hey I just watched that with my 7-year old niece...at least she now knows what a palindrome is...

regarding john dawson winter III aka johnny: I currently have hunt's tavern-burlington, vt (86-03-03)in my rotation and after a few minutes of it being on I find myself bowing towards the speakers and his guitar genius...his guitar playing is very inspiring...not really my cup-of-tea but he is a fine player...
